POSITION SUMMARY: This position provides speech pathology evalutation and treatment to referred patients. The Speech Pathologist is responsible for evaluation, treatment, communication, and education within the hospital
POSITION DUTIES:
Conducts cognitive, communication, speech and swallowing assessments on patients referred for Speech Therapy: Performs Modified Barium Swallow Studies (MBSS). Communicates with patient, staff, and family about schedule, procedures, and dietary restrictions related to swallow studies.May record swallow study using recording equipment in Radiology Dept and written report for medical record. Selects appropriate evaluation methods and interprets findings. Provides treatment to patients referred for Speech Therapy: Able to provide Speech Therapy treatments to patients with a variety of diagnoses. Uses appropriate strategies based on age, diagnosis, program, evidence and best practice.
Educates patients, families, caregivers, and staff related to cognitive, speech, and swallowing deficits: Documents education accurately and timely using appropriate tools. Participates in educational events (for example, Brain Injury Education day, CVA support group) when requested. Communicates and collaborates effectively with team and physician: Attends and is prepared for staffings, family conferences, and education sessions. Collaborates with team, patient and family for optimal outcomes. Documents results of Speech Therapy services in Medical Records: Accurately documents services using appropriate forms (for example, education form). Documentation is completed within departmental or hospital time frames. Documentation and charges accurately reflect time spent with patient, procedures conducted or treatments administered. Conducts Discharge planning for patients according to need: Communicates with patient, family, and caregivers regarding recommendations. Provides written or oral communication with recommendations for following staff.
