Registered Nurse –Post Anesthesia Care Unit ** Completion Bonus Available for Qualified Applicants Shift – Schedule: FT 9-5:30 M-F plus call back and standby Departmental Description The Post Anesthesia Care Unit has identified its scope of care to include all aspects of Post Anesthesia Care, specifically to assist the patient in returning to a hemodynamically stable condition after an anesthetic by providing safe, knowledgeable, individualized nursing care in the immediate post anesthesia phase. B. Patient/Customer Population Served Patient population includes infant, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients who have undergone a variety of general, orthopedic, gynecological, ophthalmological, genitourinary, neurological, cardiovascular, and otolaryngological procedures, performed on both an inpatient and outpatient basis. These procedures may be elective, emergent, or trauma in nature. C. Hours of Operation The Standards of PeriAnesthesia Nursing Practice provide the guidelines for postoperative care of patients in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit. These patients are cared for in the department on 24-hours a day, 7 days week basis by professional, licensed, registered nurses who are skilled in post-operative patient assessment and are A.C.L.S., P.A.L.S., and T.N.C.C. certified (optional). Ancillary and clerical support personnel are employed to augment patient care given by the professional staff, and to perform housekeeping and clerical duties. D. Employee Skill Mix Nursing staff includes the Director of Surgical/Anesthesia Services, Assistant Director/Clinical Coordinator, Clinical Instructor, Service Coordinator, and all staff are registered nurses. Patients are provided care through the primary nursing process and based on the Standards of PeriAnesthesia Nursing Practice. U.M.C. Environmental Services Department provides housekeeping. E. Staffing Post Anesthesia Care Unit patients are cared for only by professional, licensed registered nurses who are skilled in Phase I PeriAnesthesia care based on the American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ASPAN) recommended staffing ratio guidelines. Non-licensed and clerical personnel are employed to augment the patient care administered by these registered nurses to perform housekeeping, clerical duties and patient care as determined by the registered nurse. Responsibilities Must maintain a current CPR certification from American Heart Association Provides professional nursing care to patients and provides supervision and guidance to the members of the nursing staff. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job.
