JOB DESCRIPTION
Responsible for the processing of laboratory specimens and reporting of results in all areas of the clinical laboratory. Maintains laboratory records. Follows laboratory policies and procedures; maintains quality control and quality improvement practices in the laboratory.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Ability to function in all areas of the clinical laboratory: blood bank, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, and serology/immunology as needed.
Responsible for performing high-complexity testing.
Alters or adjusts methods and procedures for the neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient.
Performs quality control procedures and instrument maintenance checks.
Has knowledge and ability to perform test validation, calibration and correlation studies.
Understands the statistical reports for quality control and how to apply corrective action for test results that are out of acceptable control ranges.
Demonstrates knowledge of expected lab values for the neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient.
Notifies nursing unit and/or physician of critical lab values.
Maintains accurate laboratory records on procedures performed for statistics and billing.
Meets current documentation for certification. Maintains standards and policies for areas of responsibility if a lead technologist.
Interacts professionally with the Laboratory manager, pathologists and laboratory personnel.
Consults with other departments, as appropriate, to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities.
Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
Follows standard precautions at all times.
Demonstrates knowledge of new testing methods, products, instrumentation; remains informed on all current technologies.
Maintains current knowledge of hospital policy, Joint Commission, state and other regulatory requirements.

Troubleshoots instruments when necessary.
Records maintenance and any corrective action performed.
Responsible for inoculation, cultivating, and identifying microorganisms.
Prepares and interprets gram stains.
Documents all test results in the computer system.
Responsible for maintaining and using various equipment in the clinical laboratory.
Always verifies that the proper specimen is being analyzed for the proper patient and for the indicated test procedure.
Performs all antibody screening and identification and cross matching procedures required in the administration of blood/blood components.
Responsible for performing procedures to count and identify blood cells, coagulation studies, urinalysis and serology procedures.
Responsible for duties as required by the laboratory manager and or medical director for the smooth functioning of the laboratory. Duties to be considered as lead technologist in the areas of chemistry, hematology (to include urinalysis, serology and coagulation), point of care testing, microbiology, blood bank, Cerner laboratory information system, proficiency testing and compliance.
Rotates on call and call back duties with other technologists if necessary.
Considers the impact of actions on team members throughout the system.

Performs phlebotomy and laboratory tests as required by the physicians or physician assistants and in accordance to state and federal regulations, including C LIA. Screens telephone calls for the Physicians/Providers. Takes accurate clinical messages within the limits of her knowledge and practice policy. May answer routine patient inquiries with respect to medical questions within the limits of knowledge, as directed by Physician/Provider, and clinic policy.
Performs triage duties according to practice protocols and as scheduled by the Clinical Supervisor.
Ensures that all equipment in exam room is clean and properly set up prior to each patient encounter.
Properly pre-cleans, contains, and prepares non-disposable instruments for transport to central sterilization. Keeps appropriate logs to track instruments sent to and received back from central sterilization.
Appropriately stores sterilized instruments. Monitors expiration dates on sealed sterile instruments.
Cleans and restocks examining rooms for the day’s use.
Ensures that reports from diagnostic tests ordered have been received and have been entered into the patient’s chart directly through electronic transfer or scanned to the appropriate location, digitally.
Prepares all diagnostic reports for availability to physicians. Ensures they have been scanned or uploaded into EHR system.
Takes medication and prescription questions and refill calls from patients and pharmacists. Calls in prescriptions and prescription refills accurately to pharmacy as directed by the provider and documents accurately in the medical record. Utilizes Medication Reconciliation tools within the EHR in compliance with current Advancing Care Information guidelines.
Ensures and/or obtains insurance required prior authorizations for medication. Communicates insurance prescription requirement changes to Physician/Provider and/or patient as necessary.
Understands concept of insurance prescription formulary requirements and keeps up to date with changes as communicated and/or directed by Physician/Providers, Office Coordinator, Practice Manager, and Clinic Management.
Returns patient calls with provider directed instructions, and documents patient’s chart accordingly.
Assists in maintaining all clinical equipment to include sterilizing, if applicable. Evaluates all equipment for damage and immediately reports to direct supervisor.
Ensures patients have proper pre-operative and post-operative instructions and follows up with patients. Reports back to physician status of patient and documents in patient record.
Coordinates physician(s) office schedule with front office to ensure physician patient time is being used efficiently.
Communicates with front office staff with regard to working in patients into the physician(s) daily schedule.
May be required to float to other practices as requested by Management.

Prepares and administers medication/immunizations injections as directed by provider.
