QUALIFICATIONS:: * Must be a graduate of a state approved school of nursing and carry a current State of Indiana nursing license. * Must be certified to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation. * Must be able to work closely with residents who have a variety of acute or chronic illnesses, or disabling and emotional conditions. * Must be willing and able to assume charge of personnel assigned to the area, and to organize and assign all jobs to be done on the tour of duty, so that the workload is evenly divided among the employees on the basis of staff qualifications. RESPONSIBILITIES: * Assign all nursing assistants to residents, designating break time, and all special duties to be completed. Supervise all nursing assistants in performing duties by checking their work closely; to be sure all assignments have been completed in timely manner. * Administer all parenteral, intramuscular, and subcutaneous medications. May administer IV medications, if properly trained in IV therapy. * Make meaningful rounds of all residents, utilizing health care plans. * Insure that the individual’s health care plan is being followed. * Assist in updating the health care plan, depending on the resident’s condition and level of care, with the help of the Director of Nursing, Activities Director, Dietary Supervisor, Social Service Director, and Physical Therapist. * Recommend changes needed in staff, according to number of residents and their needs. * Recommend conferences with Director of Nursing, as needed, and participate in staff meetings and in-service training to keep staff performing at optimum level. * Make rounds with physician and record visits in chart. * Transcribe all physicians’ orders, and be aware of legal implication if physician’s orders are not carried out correctly. Orders all medications. * Administer or supervise all treatments prescribed by the physician. * Insure that all medications and treatments are charted “after the fact” by the person administering the medication or treatment. * If assisted by a QMA, be aware of his/her limitations, and do not allow him/her to exceed same. * Direct charting on the shift, so charting reflects progress and condition of resident at all times. Is responsible for approving and signing each chart, when observations are made. * Is responsible for well-being and nursing care of all residents assigned to the unit during the tour of duty, recognizes significant changes in the condition of the resident and takes necessary action.
