JOB DESCRIPTION DETAILS
Performs specimen collection and venipuncture. Orders, receives and manages specimens within the computer system for the laboratory. Registers patient information for each visit accurately and promptly.
Position requires a high school diploma or GED or 0- 6 months equivalent combination of education and experience in related area.
Unexpired, unsuspended driver's license if incumbent will be required to drive as part of their routine job duties.
Position requires 0-6 months of related experience.
Effectively communicates with all patient populations and staff by implementing organization-wide communication techniques as a daily practice.
Maintains unit-specific and hospital competencies, mandatory learning, and any clinical certifications required in accordance with the Staff Education and Training policy GA-057 and/or any other department requirements.
Effectively advocates for quality patient safety and satisfaction as a daily practice.
Demonstrated proficiency of computer skills necessary to effectively complete position requirements.
Previous experience and demonstrated professionalism in effectively communicating with customers and in promoting a positive service atmosphere.
Ability to work independently in a multi-task environment producing quality work.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:
Draws venous and capillary blood specimens from Inpatients, Outpatients, and ER patients on a routine and emergency basis. Responds rapidly to "STAT" orders for collection of patient specimen within 10 minutes of the request.
Collects blood from patients of all ages. Collects blood with a caring, comforting and professional manner.
Performs venipuncture in accordance with established policies and utilizing the vacutainer method as the primary means of blood collection.Makes appropriate decisions as to when to collect blood using a butterfly. Performs venipuncture in accordance with established policies when using a butterfly.
Special Collections: Performs capillary puncture in accordance with established policies. Performs and reports bleeding time results appropriately. Performs blood culture collection in accordance with established policies.
Promptly and accurately orders and processes test requisitions. Per established policies receives specimens in the computer timely. Prepares samples for laboratory testing in accordance with established procedures. Operates a centrifuge properly. Delivers patient specimens to proper laboratory sections.
Follows laboratory procedures for accurate documentation for identification of specimens including but not limited to patient name and date of birth. Uses the Carefusion positive patient/specimen ID system appropriately.
Utilizes the pending logs; documents all actions on the logs, pulls logs many times throughout the shift. Resolves issues with timely collection with the staff on the nursing units. Utilizes the last log of the shift as a communication tool to discuss pending issues with the next shift. Does not leave work left undone for the next shift.
Answers phones; receives and delivers messages in an accurate and timely manner. Uses the companion phone appropriately.
Keeps work area and supplies clean and stocked; disinfects work area, countertops, draw areas/chairs at least once per shift. Restocks draw supplies at the end of the shift and as needed. Put supplies received away timely. Keeps locked supply areas and cabinets locked.
Performs general clerical and administrative tasks associated with the efficient operation of the Pathology Department. Uses appropriate phone etiquette.
Registers patient information for each visit accurately and promptly. Verifies the registration is correct to assure the specimens are sent to the correct lab and to assure billing compliance. Assure all patient information and insurance information is correct.
Obtains diagnosis codes as needed. Follows established policies to obtain missing codes and failed codes. Follows established policies for the ABN process to assure compliance.
Provides excellent customer service. Offers patients refreshments. Offers patient satisfaction surveys. Receives positive feedback on surveys. Notifies waiting patients of delays. Resolves immediate patient concerns appropriately and with minimal or no supervison. Strives to exceed the patient's expectation.
