Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:  Supervises and coordinates the activities of nursing personnel and engages in a variety of procedures in various units of the department through the interpretation of department policy and procedures for staff personnel.  Participates in the investigation and preparation of reports relative to the improvement of nursing care, safety training, and personnel performance.  Coordinates total nursing care for patients, participates in patient and family teaching and provides leadership by working cooperatively with ancillary nursing and other patient team personnel in maintaining standards for professional nursing practice in the clinical setting.
Associate Degree:  Accredited school of Nursing - Required
Bachelors Degree: Nursing - Preferred
Preferably two years nursing experience. - Preferred
Valid State of Nebraska Nursing License - Required
Current BLS certification - Required
ACLS, TNCC, PALS, NALS, NRP, Stable - Required

  • Maintains a high standard of patient care and personnel performance by being aware of the indications pointed out by the Quality Improvement/Risk Management Program and gives those problems special attention.

  • Directs and coordinates the functions of subordinates.
  • Assists in the continuous analysis and evaluation of Nursing Services by the use of quality improvement studies, management review program, and performance evaluations.
  • Maintains effective communications with the staff and nursing administration, establishes and maintains communications and utilizes teaching opportunities with patients and their significant individuals.
  • Assists in coordinating the activities of Nursing Services with the other services of the hospital.
  • Coordinates maintenance of safe and satisfactory working conditions for the staff.
  • Controls staff by the use of recognized control mechanisms, including direct observation of staff and immediate correction, evaluations, counseling, and appropriate disciplinary actions.
  • Controls staff by taking appropriate and corrective action through the nursing management team.
  • Maintains a high morale among subordinates by evaluating performance fairly, treating staff in a dignified manner, taking appropriate action with the staff and keeping the staff informed of matters.
  • Recommends plans for personnel development and training needs of staff by being aware of quality improvement indicators and incident report investigations that point out inadequacies of staff performance.
  • Coordinates and follows up the effective use of personnel supplies, equipment and facilities.  Participates in the maintenance of a clean and safe environment.
  • Recommends to CNO the purchase of materials or equipment for the improvement of nursing services.
  • Investigates missing items and charges, establishes responsibility for the missing items and charges and takes corrective action.
  • Cooperates with other departments and provides for coordinated patient care services.
  • Guides staff members individually on professional and personal matters.
  • Attends meetings as required.  Participates actively in committees for improvement of nursing care.
  • Actively participates in in-service and continuing education, including the design and presentation of educational experiences.
  • Promotes good public relations with patients, visitors, and the community.
  • Assesses the patient’s conditions and nursing needs, sets goals, prescribes appropriate nursing actions to meet those goals and the physical, psychological, social and rehabilitative needs of the patient including discharge planning.
  • Initiates the development of individualized care plan/standards.
  • Reports pertinent observations and reactions regarding patients to appropriate person and documents those observations accurately and concisely.
  • Consistently investigates patient complaints, investigates patient care incidents and completes required forms.
  • Assures safety of all staff and patients through continuous monitoring of all departments for compliance with infection control programs, policies, and procedures as appropriate.
  • Responds immediately to all crises or calls for assistance as needed.
  • Assists with special procedures as feasible, as starting intravenous therapy and assists physician with special tests and procedures such as Thoracentesis, lumbar tap, etc.
  • Ensures calls are made with regard to a death and supports staff and families; includes calls to attending and/or consulting provider, county coroner, long term care facilities, funeral director, chaplain, and family or significant others of patients as required.
  • Assists in the orientation of personnel, monitors their nursing skills, and guides and observes staff that may need additional training in procedures at which they are not adept.
  • Maintains proficiency in clinical and administrative skills, assists team members in giving care to patients or administers direct care when professional nursing skills and judgment are needed.
  • Assists in maintaining standards of regulatory agencies within the Nursing Service Department.
  • Suggests and/or participates in studies or committee work.
  • Assigns nursing care team members in accordance with the patient’s needs and the personnel’s capabilities and qualifications and assigns other duties as needed.
  • Directs, supervises and evaluates nursing care provided to patients.
  • Cooperates with Utilization Review department for the purpose of pre-admission reviews and admission reviews, placement of patients at proper levels of care, and PRO activities.  Responsible for above activities when UR department is not staffed.
  • Consistently supports the Compliance Program and participates in ongoing monitoring of activities with respect to compliance related issues.
