Performs those duties, under policies and procedures approved by the Laboratory Director and/or his designees, and laboratory management that are exempt from State of Tennessee laboratory personnel licensing laws. Includes but not limited to performing phlebotomy and specimen collection, the initiation of pre-testinganalytical protocols, the performance of waived testing, clerical testing department duties, housekeeping, inventory management, phone duty, and courier duties as assigned.
Education and/or experience: High school graduate or equivalent required,. Minimum of two years’ experience as a Laboratory Aide, Certified Phlebotomist, or Specimen Processor in a hospital or medical setting preferred. Or eligibility requirements are met for ASCP credentialing as a Medical Lab Assistant. The position is 10.5 hour work days, every other weekend, and alternating holiday coverage.
Knowledge: Knowledge necessary to complete the on the job orientation in the Laboratory Specimen Processing/Central Processing. Understands specimen flow within the Laboratory through pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical processes. Understands basic customer/patient service; understands how to function as part of a team.
Skills: Must have computer skills sufficient to understand, remember, and operate multiple operational systems. Proficient typing skills. Must have good mathematical, verbal and written skills.
Abilities: Must have the ability to function as part of a work team. Able to provide leadership in an acceptable manner to subordinate personnel. Able to multitask and prioritize multiple demands. Ability to adjust specimen flow in response to STAT orders, emergencies, and other fluctuations in workload. Must have good problem solving skills.
