DEFINITION: The role of this position is to facilitate getting patients seen by a medical provider meeting provider and patient’s expectations assuring a smooth flow of patients throughout the office visit. This may require working in various work locations. Performs the clinical and clerical functions as assigned.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Can hold a registered nursing or licensed practical nursing license or be a graduate of an accredited medical assistant program, certified by the state of Michigan preferred. Computer knowledge required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to walk and stand for up to 10 hours. Sitting, bending, pushing and pulling is required. Must be able to lift 35 pounds. Must have normal conversation hearing and normal reading vision (with or without correction).
THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:
Supports the mission, vision and values of KMHC.
Maintains confidentiality of information and records.
Attends monthly department meetings.
Maintains a courteous and professional attitude in all contact with patients, visitors, medical staff, and other members of the public.
Provides patient education materials specific to ordered diagnostics, procedures, diet or medical condition.
Performs duties meeting all federal and state rules, regulations and laws.
Assists other staff in a team approach to assure optimal patient care and flow of schedule.
Admits patients to exam rooms, obtains and records vital signs and purpose of visit.
Straightens and restocks exams rooms, lab, drug screen room and employee lounge.
Obtains specimens for testing as ordered by provider. Packages specimens for transport to outside lab or performs testing per policy/procedure.
Administers intradermal, subcutaneous or intramuscular injections ordered by provider, following manufacturer’s instructions for handling and administration.
Returns phone messages to patients as requested by provider.
Calls prescriptions to pharmacies as ordered by provider.
Collects urine specimens for DOT and non-DOT drug screens following procedures and DOT law (CR49).
Performs breath alcohol testing following manufacturer’s guidelines, procedures and DOT law (CR49).
Prepares patients for physical exams (DOT, Pre-op, sports, etc.). This may include vision, hearing, post exercise vitals, set up for tonometric exam, lab work or outside tests such as x-rays or PFT.
Sets up and assists provider with minor surgical procedures, casting and pelvic exams.
Performs daily, weekly and monthly laboratory controls. Documents all controls performed. Notified RHC clinical nurse manager or medical director and documents if controls are outside acceptable range as listed on the control log. Follows and documents corrective actions taken when controls are outside the acceptable range.
Performs monthly cleaning guides as listed on monthly check lists.
Documents all immunizations on the appropriate log and computer program.
Schedules appointments and tests ordered by provider.
Cleans instruments and equipment after use. Wraps instruments for sterilization.
Performs EKG’s and nebulizer treatments as ordered by provider.
Performs laboratory proficiency testing as assigned.
Performs monthly EFT calibration.
Performs blood pressure checks and answers questions for “walk-in” patients. Documents all appointments scheduled injections given, lab test performed for each patient at time of service.
Performs duties of receptionist.
Performs other duties and functions as may be assigned.
