Job Description:

Responsible for administration of anesthesia and clinical instruction of student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs).

Induction of anesthesia.


Maintain anesthesia at the required levels.


Support life functions during the administration of anesthesia.


Recognize and take appropriate action to abnormal patient responses.


Provide professional observation resuscitative care as needed.


Provide clinical instruction to student nurse anesthetists.  Participate in the overall instruction of SRNAs.

Serve as resource personnel for other areas within the hospital.


Education: Graduate of an accredited Nurse Anesthesia Program required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Experience: Graduate of a certified AANA council on anesthesia training program

Number and Type of Employees Supervised: SRNAs enrolled in USC school of medicine/ Nurse anesthesia program, anesthesia techs.


Licensure, Registry or Certification Required: RN currently licensed in South Carolina; current certification with American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA); Current BLS (Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers) required prior to start date directly through the American Red Cross, the American Heart Association, or the military. (To register: Blended Learning or In Person BLS through the American Red Cross; or Classroom or Skills Session BLS through the American Heart Association. Certification must include an in-person skills session.


Special Training: Must possess skills necessary to treat patients of all ages to include infants, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients. AANA continuing education programs acquiring 40 CEUs every two years.
