The incumbent performs work in the skilled painting trade, on a journeyman level, in the maintenance and repair of buildings, equipment and facilities. Work is performed under the supervision of a higher level supervisory employee or department head, who assigns and inspects work for conformance with procedures and standards. Supervises and trains maintenance workers and laborers assigned to assist in the performance of painting and related work. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Prepares all types of surfaces for refinishing by smoothing surfaces, by filling holes, cracks and joints and/or removing old finishes;
Applies new finishes to decorate and protect interior and exterior finishes or prepares finishes to match specified colors by blending and mixing ingredients; creates special effects by applying finish with cloth, brush, roller, sponge, spray gun or fingers; applies wall paper and/or wall coverings;
Erects staging or scaffolds and spreads protective covering over floors, furniture and equipment;
Plans and lays out work; estimates material and supplies required; reads and interprets blue prints, specifications or written orders to determine nature of work required; requests materials and supplies;
Refinishes furniture and fixtures; may cut stencils and stencil surfaces with lettering or decorations; paint signs on such surfaces as cloth, board, walls, doors, glass and equipment;
May perform related tasks and may assist other craftsmen on repair or installation projects.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the tools, terminology, procedures and equipment of the skilled painting maintenance & repair trades; ability to make a variety of skilled repairs and installations rapidly and accurately; ability to read and interpret plans, blue prints and specifications; ability to get along well with others; mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity; initiative and resourcefulness; industry and dependability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Elementary education and three (3) years of experience working as an apprentice Maintenance Worker in the skilled painting trade.
NOTE: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.
