Title: Registered Nurse – Cardiovascular Stepdown Unit (CVSU)
Shift: Full Time, Nights (7 p.m.-7:30 a.m.)
Every 3rd weekend (Saturday & Sunday). Holiday rotation. Minimal On Call – according to unit guidelines
This position will be scheduled in the Cardiovascular Stepdown Unit (CVSU) department at the Christ Hospital, 2139 Auburn Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio 45219
Unit Description: The Cardiovascular Step-Down Unit (CVSU) is a 32 bed surgical step-down/progressive care unit. The primary focus is Cardiothoracic Surgery and Interventional Cardiology. All nurses are ACLS certified and practice by the AACN Progressive Care Guidelines. Competencies include chest tube removal, temporary pacing wire removal, femoral arterial line removal, arterial blood gas procedure, complete external pacing, ACT and iSTAT point of care testing and much more. Additional support staff on the CVSU unit includes patient care assistants, health unit coordinators, cardiac monitor readers and exercise physiologists. Specialty certification is highly encouraged.
Job Overview: This registered nurse will provide patient centered, culturally appropriate and age specific care using specialized critical care knowledge, judgment and skills. All care provided is based on the concepts inherent in the model of care for TCHHN (The Christ Hospital Health Network) with a focus of promoting an ongoing partnership between patients, families and the healthcare provider team. The RN adheres to the American Nursing Association (ANA) code of ethics and to the scope of practice as described in the Ohio Nurse Practice Act.
Candidates for this position should be high energy, highly motivated and enjoy working in a team atmosphere. The care environment is a fast paced nursing environment that provides exposure to many facets of cardiac care while providing infinite opportunities for growth of nursing knowledge, to build a comprehensive and extensive skill set and to practice and master critical thinking skills across the care continuum. This position also provides the opportunity for candidates to participate in decision making processes regarding patient care and unit processes. In addition to technical nursing abilities, interested candidates should possess character traits and qualities of compassion, patience and professionalism with a desire to actively participate in continual learning and professional growth.
Performance of the Role of RN on CVSU includes the following:
*Completion of a holistic assessment of the patient’s physical, psychosocial, spiritual and educational needs utilizing the Christ Hospital Professional Practice Model
*Utilization of collected data to establish and prioritize a list of actual and potential patient specific problems and needs
*Documentation of patient care in a timely manner, according to unit and organizational policies
*Coordination with the interdisciplinary team, patient and family to provide patient centered care
*Communication of the patient’s plan of care utilizing handoff processes with all team members
*Demonstration of critical thinking and accountability for performance and delegation of patient specific nursing actions
*Evaluation of effectiveness of nursing care interventions with an ability to recognize a need for making adjustments in patient plan of care as determined by patient response
*Completion of ongoing, individualized, holistic patient and family education focusing on population health management based on specific patient needs and plan of care
*Possession of the skill set and critical thinking capabilities to respond to emergency situations as they arise.
*Ability to recognize, Implement and practice interventions to prevent contamination or transmission of disease based on organizational standards and policies.
Education: Minimum requirement of Associates Degree in Nursing (ADN). Expectation that Bachelors in Science and Nursing (BSN) be completed after hire.
Experience: Graduation from accredited academic nursing program. One (1) year of inpatient med/surg or telemetry RN experience preferred but not required.
Licensure: Active Ohio RN License required
