Job Description

Position Summary--Speech Language Pathologists are responsible for assessing diagnosing and treating speech, language, social, communicatoin, cognitive-communication and swallowing disorders in children to adults.
  • Position Qualifications
      • Required:  Completion of an accredited speech therapist educational program.  
      • Preferred:

      • Required:  Active license to practice speech therapy in the state of Iowa
        Basic Life Support (CPR)
      • Preferred:

      • Required: Ability to conduct swallow studies.

    The following Job Responsibilities / Duties are intended to describe the general nature of the responsibilities and duties associated with this position. ·         Obtain information from physicians, providers and patients needed for appropriate diagnosis, prognosis and intervention of speech therapy.
·         Plan and implement appropriate care plans and programs utilizing the speech therapist skill to meet the individual needs of his/her patients in communication, cognition, language and swallowing to restore function and adapt to living environment.
·         Conduct and make recommendations utilizing video swallow fluoroscopies with radiologist and radiology department.
·         Utilize electronic medical record to document care plans, daily notes, updated care plans as outlined in policies and procedures of the rehabilitation department. 
·         Provide and develop education and community outreach programs to the citizens of Cass County related to speech and language pathology.
·         Supervise nursing and nurse aids with the treatment of speech therapy recommendations of hospitalized patients to ensure patient safety.
·         Conduct and participate in training medical and nursing personnel in speech therapy techniques and objectives.
·         Participate in staff conferences, in-services and educational programs.
·         May effectively work with a variety of age groups from pediatrics to geriatrics.
·         Maintain and improve treatment skill and profession knowledge through literature, ASHA meetings/events, seminars, and continuing education courses.
·         Conduct patient education programs as indicated for individual patient needs.
·         Perform other related duties as required from rehabilitation director
·         Maintains familiarity with various types of medical insurance and obtain pre-authorizations or re-authorization as required by patients’ health care insurers or managed care providers.
·         Knows the formal and informal department goals, standards, policies and procedures which may include familiarity of other departments within the medical center. Is sensitive to the interrelationship of both people and functions within the department. Assures that oral communication (both in person and by phone) is relayed to appropriate staff person.
