Infection Control Practitioner
Performs surveillance, conducts prevention and control of infections with investigations, as well as education and consultations internally and externally for CalvertHealth and satellite facilities. Reports findings to community health officials and internal Infection Control Committee. Collaborates with department leaders to eliminate potential harm from infectious diseases to patients, visitors, and staff.
Position requires a bachelor's degree in healthcare-related field (nursing (BSN), public health, microbiology, biology, etc.).
Maryland RN licensure for nursing professionals
Certification in Infection Control (CIC) preferred within 3 years of hire or internal transfer.
Position requires 5-7 years related experience. Supervisory, policy procedure development, teaching, and quality improvement experience desirable.
Maintains unit-specific and hospital competencies, mandatory learning, and any clinical certifications required in accordance with the Staff Education and Training policy GA-057 and/or any other department requirements.
Effectively communicates with all staff by implementing organization-wide communication techniques as a daily practice.
Effectively advocates for quality patient safety and satisfaction as a daily practice.
Demonstrated proficiency of computer skills necessary to effectively complete position requirements including Microsoft Office products. Experience using Meditech or other electronic medical record application preferred.
Previous experience and demonstrated professionalism in effectively communicating with customers and in promoting a positive service atmosphere.
Ability to work independently in a multi-task environment producing quality work.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:
Conducts special investigations as indicated and/or assigned by the Infection Control Practitioner.
Performs routine and special ongoing monitoring, investigation, and evaluation of electronic medical records lab and admit logs (and other data sources) to identify hospital-acquired infections, common source outbreaks, and Infection Control-related issues as defined by department policy.
Contacts local, other counties, and/or state health departments as necessary and Center for Disease Control (CDC) or other agencies as indicated (or as advised by Infection Control Practitioner, Infection Control and Prevention Chairperson, or IC-07, etc.).
Completes the required phone and written state Confidential Morbidity Reports and other special reports (i.e. influenza-like-illness sentinel reports to CDC) in a timely manner and documents same in patient record.
Reports patients with healthcare-associated infections or other infections and suspected common source OUTBREAKS to the Infection Control Practitioner and/or as per department and organizational policies.
Initiates infectious disease exposure contact lists with Department Managers and the Employee Health Nurse as indicated for individual follow-up and documentation. Assists with this process as necessary for timely completion.
Ensures compliance with Joint Commission, CDC, and Regulatory Agencies and standards for healthcare.
Conducts routine observations, isolation rounds and chart auditing.
Collaborates with Education & Training Department to coordinate educational activities/opportunities with respect to various quality and infection control initiatives.
Surveys units and various work environments to ensure proper infection control practices are maintained during maintenance or new construction within the facility.
