Job Description

Title:  Health Unit Coordinator/Cardiac Monitor Reader
 
Shift:  Part-Time, Days
 
This position will be scheduled approximately 24 hours per week and will be located in the Cardiovascular Step Down Unit at The Christ Hospital Health Network (TCHNH) located at 2139 Auburn Ave. Cincinnati Ohio 45219.
 
Unit Description: The recently-renovated Heart Failure Treatment Center has 28 private medical telemetry beds. The unit offers a family-centered environment. In addition to caring for heart failure patients, the unit specializes in the care of patients diagnosed with MI, cardiac arrhythmias, syncope and cardiomyopathy, as well as the recovery of patients following ablation, pacer placement/ICD and PTA. Medical services are offered to all types of patient populations requiring cardiac monitoring, including:  renal, endocrine, pulmonary, oncologic, general medicine and geriatric. Other services provided in this unit include the titration of multiple intravenous medications and conscious sedation for cardioversion. In addition, a select group of nurses complete special training to provide ultrafiltration for our decompensated heart failure patients. All nurses are ACLS certified and have completed an EKG interpretation course.

Job Overview: The Health Unit Coordinator/Cardiac Monitor Reader (HUC/CMR) will greet visitors and assist them as needed.  Provide the clerical support to the clinical team in carrying out the daily functions of patient care.  This position provides the pivotal communication link for processing information/requests to and from patients, staff, visitors, physicians, and other departments or agencies.  Has responsibility for initiating and/or ensuring the data entry of patient related functions/ processes, as well as the management (maintenance) of the medical record and its related forms, documents, from admission to discharge.  Communication is culturally based and age-specific.
 
The Health Unit Coordinator/Cardiac Monitor Reader may perform the following duties:
  • Keep RN/MD informed of any dysrhythmias that occur on patients.
  • Keep clinical engineering aware of all equipment malfunctions/idiosyncrasies.
  • Document and interpret rhythm strips correctly on medical record
  • Document clinical event trends as necessary
  • Continuously observes the cardiac monitors for patient dysrhythmias
  • Assist physicians with clinical event review trends on patients as requested
  • Keep clinical manager/staff informed of issues.
  • Computer responsibilities as directed
  • Chart responsibilities as directed
  • Maintain environment/supplies/equipment
 
Education:
  • High School graduate or GED required.
  • Must pass the Cardiac Monitor Reader test upon hire.
  • Health Unit Coordinator certification preferred.
  • Certification in American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers preferred.
 
Experience:
  • Previous HUC experience of 3 years.
  • Competent in reading at the 9th grade level and in math at the 7th grade level as demonstrated on a nationally normed test.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
  • Ability and willingness to work within a team and accept delegated duties.
