Job Description

Title:  Patient Care Assistant – Electronic ICU
 
Shift:  Part-Time, Rotating
 
*Paid training available for those who are not State Nurse Aide Registry (STNA) certified or have not completed a medical-surgical nursing clinical.  One (1) year work commitment required.*

This position will be scheduled approximately 24 hours per week and will be located in the Critical Connections (eICU) at in the Medical Office building at The Christ Hospital Health Network(TCHHN) located at 2132 Auburn Ave. Cincinnati Ohio 45219.
 
Job Overview:  The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) performs duties to enhance patient experience while maintaining patient comfort and a safe patient environment. PCA’s provide continuous observation and surveillance of assigned patients.  First line of action is to verbally redirect the patient from engaging in at risk behaviors.  Summons the nursing staff if the patient requires assistance.  All care is provided based on the concepts inherent in the model of care for TCHHN which promotes an on-going partnership between patients and families and the team of healthcare providers. 
 
The Patient Care Assistant may perform the following duties:
 

  • Demonstrate understanding and proficiency of the use of the AvaSys TeleSitter Solution software.
  • Maintain visual observation at all times.  Verbally redirect patient over digital 2-way audio device that is in patient room.  Immediately summon the nursing staff if the patient requires assistance.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to provide the appropriate care to this patient population based on the patients individualized treatment plan as delegated by the RN.
  • Participate in hand-off of pertinent information/behavior about assigned patients when arriving on unit and upon completion of shift assignment. 
  • Provide patients with explanations as necessary.
  • Seek help or advice as soon as possible when patient appears to pose a threat to themselves or others.  Participates in a collaborative identification and reporting of patient safety issues.  Assures patient environment safety.  Seeks assistance with removal of any potential safety hazard from room and reports findings to Charge Nurse.
  • Demonstrate safe work practices and attitudes, follows safety rules, works to prevent unsafe conditions and behaviors, and participates in organizational and department safety programs.
  • Capable of continuous monitoring of up to 15 patients on one screen at one time and remaining alert at all times while on duty.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients using a microphone and headset
  • Ability to communicate with hospital staff and respond quickly to patient behavioral changes.
  • Ability to use discretion and courtesy when working with patients, visitors, and staff
  • Basic computer operation skills
  • Basic Microsoft windows experience
  • Efficiency in multitasking
  • Ability to prioritize simultaneous situations

 
 
Education:   High School graduate or GED required.
 

  • 40 hours of Acute Med-Surg training; Specialty Training, and Hospital Specific Training
  • Oneof the following criteria must be documented:
    • A completed and passed state sponsored Medicaid Nurse Aid Training and Competency evaluation program.  
    • Be enrolled upon hire and successfully complete and pass a state sponsored Medicaid Nurse Aid Training and Competency evaluation program within 2 months of completion of course. 
    • A nursing student who has successfully completed one medical-surgical rotation or another acute care experience. 
  •   Certification in AHA Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers
  •  State Nurse Aide Registry  (see above)

 
Experience: HospitalPCA experience preferred.
