Pharmacy Services and Technology The Pharmacy provides 24/365 access to pharmacist and pharmacy services. Technology plays an important role in the distribution process within Deaconess.  The department strives to provide the most up-to-date equipment to ensure patient and staff safety.  Medication distribution uses a combination of centralized and decentralized automation, bar code medication administration and smart pump technology.  Patient information is managed through EPIC for both in and outpatients to create a complete medical record.  The Pharmacy supports a decentralized patient-centered, integrated model.  Pharmacist work more than 70% of their time in a clinical role and the remaining time in some aspect of dispensing. Summary of the Job This position has responsibility for providing pharmaceutical care for all patients of the hospital and ambulatory clinics with an emphasis in the oncology infusion pharmacies.  This position also has responsibility for demonstrating leadership, immediate oversight and training in the daily activities of the pharmacy department. Job Duties   1.  Assures personal and departmental compliance with all regulatory and accreditation standards including ASHP, HFAP, OSHA, ISBOP, ISDOH, FDA, DEA, USP and EPA. 2.  Contributes to the quality improvement of the department and /or organization by:  Participating on a quality improvement team; Identifying improvement strategies for the department/organization, including potential cost savings. 3. The Pharmacy Department at Deaconess Health System is dedicated to educating and developing future pharmacists.  The Pharmacy Department is made up of approximately 70 pharmacists and 60 technicians that staff in multiple locations throughout the network, including two inpatient hospitals, two oncology centers, The Women’s Hospital, and several ambulatory clinics.  The internship program is designed to provide students with opportunities to learn about all of these aspects of hospital pharmacy, and to prepare them for a career in hospital pharmacy. We provide chemotherapy, antibiotic infusions and various outpatient procedures. Be a part of the Deaconess Food & Nutrition Department. We strive to have our staff learn & master several positions within the department. We promote cross training in our department. In our department, patients can order from 6:30am-7:00pm off of our room service menu, which varies per the patient’s diet. The call center or the Room Service Specialist can take the patients order, based on their diet then the patients order prints to the Room Service Line. On the Room Service Line we assemble the patience tray based off the order, the food cart is delivered up to the Room Service Specialist and then the Room Service Specialist passes the tray to the patient. Education and Experience Completion of High School or GED preferred.  No experience needed.  May learn duties in 6 weeks to 3 months depending on the job; must know the importance of accuracy.

Under the supervision of the RN, the Patient Care Technician (PCT) performs various care activities and related services necessary in caring for the personal needs, comfort and safety for a specific patient population (ANA Standards of Delegation, 2004).  The PCT must be able to demonstrate growth and development knowledge and skills to provide patient care appropriate to the age of the patient served.  Employee must be able to successfully complete job specific orientation, competencies, and meet/exceed standards as identified in the criteria based performance appraisal.  PCTs must demonstrate awareness of patient’s rights in all aspects of patient care and reports issue to appropriate person.  The PCT demonstrates leadership through coordination of unit equipment and activities.   The Patient Care Technician is a member of the multidisciplinary team, under the direction of the RN, which provides or assists with basic patient care requirements, treatments and procedures.  Communicates to the RN pertinent findings or observations noted while providing patient care and comfort.  Assist professional staff with basic life support principles.  The Medical Renal Care Center (MRCC) integrates care for the patient from adulthood through geriatrics. The MRCC manages the care of patients requiring telemetry monitoring, patients experiencing cardiovascular/renal problems including: renal insufficiency/failure, Heart Failure, Unstable Angina/MI, Pre Open Heart Surgery, Dysrhythmias and other cardiovascular/renal conditions. The MRCC calculates and manages the care of patients with multiple infusion drips including maintenance of patients with Hickman, Portacath, and Quinton caths. The MRCC manages the care of patients receiving peritoneal dialysis, the dialysis patient in coordination with the dialysis RN for general medical patients, and patients requiring fistula/graft placement and dialysis line placement pre/post operatively. Pharmacy Services and Technology The Pharmacy provides 24/365 access to pharmacist and pharmacy services. Technology plays an important role in the distribution process within Deaconess.  The department strives to provide the most up-to-date equipment to ensure patient and staff safety.  Medication distribution uses a combination of centralized and decentralized automation, bar code medication administration and smart pump technology.  Patient information is managed through EPIC for both in and outpatients to create a complete medical record.  The Pharmacy supports a decentralized patient-centered, integrated model.  Pharmacist work more than 70% of their time in a clinical role and the remaining time in some aspect of dispensing. Summary of the Job This position has responsibility for providing pharmaceutical care for all patients of the hospital and ambulatory clinics with an emphasis in the oncology infusion pharmacies.  This position also has responsibility for demonstrating leadership, immediate oversight and training in the daily activities of the pharmacy department.
